Track 1Emptiness

I originally wrote this tune, or, at least a tune with the same title, one sleepless night many years ago at a friend's house. A few years later, I changed some of the lyrics. Later still, I changed the time signature from 4/4 to 7/8. With each transformation, I liked the song better. Ultimately, about the only thing that remained intact was the title.

The song (as it eventually turned out) dealt with the concept of feeling neurotic about a failed relationship. It's easy to believe that if only one thing had been different, maybe things could have worked out. It's just a short jump from there to blaming oneself. The"what if..." and "if only I..." thoughts are irrelevant yet we often can't stop ourselves from replaying those scenes in our minds and wondering. This song is about that kind of wondering, about the examination and re-examination of one's actions as well as one's inactions.
